Information on Backpacks

Packs used for traveling are a bit different from packs used for hiking -- they tend to be larger, heavier, and sturdier. This is because they need to withstand being tossed around by airport baggage handlers. They are often quite large because they have to hold all the travelers goods. On the other hand, the packs used for hiking can be smaller and lighter. Backpackers carry less weight than most travelers, and they handle their packs a lot more gently.

A lot depends on the length of your backpacking trips. A good weekender pack will probably not work as well for a ten day expedition. Much also depends on whether you're travelling alone or in a group. When you travel in a group, each person ends up carrying a bit less weight. Another factor for longer trips is how frequently you'll be able to resupply. If you're hiking a section of the Appalachian Trail, it's pretty easy to get into town from almost any major road crossing, and you cross major roads every couple of days. On the other hand, if you're in the middle of the northern Ontario wilderness, resupplying can pose considerable logistical problems, and you may be forced to carry a lot more food with you even for shorter trips.

It is also worth your while to discuss your needs with your local outfitter. Most of the better outfitters can give you excellent advice -- the folks who work at such places are experienced backpackers who have actually field tested the stuff they sell. Read the reviews in the major outdoor magazines, like Backpacker and Outside!

Once you have determined your needs, you can choose from a fairly broad range of high quality brands. I will give you a short list of the better brands -- for the most part, these companies categorize there packs according to type (internal frame vs external frame) and intended use. Do your research, and then browse through the list.

Word of advice: The packs designed for longer trips (7 - 10 days, e.g.) are designed to carry all the supplies that you'd need for a trip of that length. If you'll be able to resupply every 2 or 3 days, then you'll only need a pack good for 2-3 days.

There are many long-distance hikers who go with ultra light equipment, carrying no more than 20 lbs in a very light and relatively small pack (less than a pound, around 2400 cubic inches). But it takes pretty specialized equipment to go the ultra light route, and it's difficult to pull it off in cooler weather because of the bulk of the warmer clothes that you'll need. And even a 2400 cubic inch pack will be larger than you'll need for most day hikes.

A lot also depends on the kind of day hiking and long weekend trips you have in mind. A day hike in the White Mountains or the High Peaks of the Adirondacks will require more equipment than a trip in lower elevations where you're less likely to run into extremes of weather and temperature over the course of the day.

Use a small fanny pack for day hikes in the NY-NJ region, but in the higher elevations of New England and the Adirondacks, use a 2000 cubic inch pack to carry the warmer clothes you will need as you ascend to the higher elevations. And for 3-4 day hikes,use a frame pack (6+ lbs, 5000+ cubic inches) and carry enough amenities to make a comfortable camp. On the other hand, when you are out for 8-10 days of Appalachian Trail hiking, use a smaller ultra light pack (1.5 lbs, 3400+ cubic inches) and skimp on some of the camp comforts in favor of making hiking as comfortable as possible.

  • Not having the home properly inspected. Every prudent buyer will take the time to get a thorough home inspection. The investment is simply too great to take any chances. Get an inspection from a qualified, respected professional.

  • Failing to verify the qualifications and reputation of a home builder. It?s advisable to speak with three to four people who have purchased from the home builder, particularly one that is new on the scene. Are they satisfied with the end product? Has there been an unusual amount of troubleshooting during or after construction? Ask questions. Most people will be proud to discuss their home with you. This is also an opportunity to visit with possible future neighbors.

  • Rushing into a decision. Settling for less. This is one of the largest, if not the largest, investment you?ll make in your lifetime. Patience is critical in heading off mistakes. Once you know it?s the correct choice then, with your real estate professional, move quickly.

  • Waiting for interest rates to come down or hoping demand slows. There is no way to know for sure how market conditions will change. When you find the right home at the right price it?s time to move.

  • Not investing at all. The benefits of home ownership begin with various tax deductions and end most likely with growing equity. Building home equity has proven to be a great way toward a rich fulfilling retirement.

For years now, we?ve been recommending that home sellers pay for a professional home inspection when they list their home for sale so that both parties know the home?s strengths and weaknesses before an offer is ever made. With current market conditions favoring buyers, savvy home sellers understand that paying for a professional home inspection can help them better position their home within the current market.

Three Tips for Choosing Bridesmaid Jewelry

Wouldn?t it be great if just for one day ? your wedding day ? all the women serving as your bridesmaids could all look similar, if not exactly alike? How easy it would be then to outfit them all with the same dresses, shoes, hairstyles, bridesmaid jewelry, etc.!

But, alas, bridesmaids do not come in cookie-cutter sizes or shapes. Air Travel Timesaving Tips To Speed Your Trip

Before ariving at the Airport:

. Avoid wearing clothing, jewelry, and accessories that contain metal. Metal items may set off the alarm on the metal detector.

. Instead, place jewelry and other metal items, including the contents of your pockets, in your carry-on baggage until you clear security. Mobile phones, pagers, keys, lighters, and loose change are examples of items containing metal.

. Put all undeveloped film and cameras with film in your Carry-on baggage. Checked baggage screening will damage undeveloped film.

. Check ahead of time with your airline or travel agent to determine the airline's baggage policy, including number of pieces you can bring and the size and weight limitations.

. Carry-on baggage is generally limited to one carry-on bag plus one personal item. Personal items include laptops, purses, small backpacks, briefcases, or camera cases. Remember, 1+1.

. The limit of one carry-on and one personal item (purse, briefcase or computer case) does not apply to medical supplies, equipment, mobility aids and/or assistive devices by a person with a disability.

. Place identification tags with your name, address and your phone number on all your baggage, including your laptop computer. It is a good idea to place an identification tag inside your baggage as well.

. Pack your outer coat or jacket in your baggage when possible.

. Do NOT pack or bring prohibited items to the airport. Visit http://www.tsa.dot.gov for a complete list.

. Leave gifts unwrapped. Be aware that wrapped gifts may need to be opened for inspection. This applies to both carry-on and checked baggage.

. Avoid overpacking so that your articles don't spill out if your bag is opened for inspection.

. Think carefully about the personal items you place in your carry-on baggage. The screeners may have to open your bag and examine its contents.

. Consider placing articles in clear plastic bags inside your baggage to minimize handing of your personal items.

. If you have a medical implant or other device that is likely to set off the alarm on the metal detector, bring evidence verifying this condition. Although this is not a requirement, it may help expedite the screening process.

. Check with your airline or travel agent to determine how early to arrive at the airport. Ask if you should go to the ticket counter or checked-baggage screening area first. Not all airports are the same.

. Check with your airport to confirm which parking lots are open if you will be parking at the airport. Some lots may be closed for security reasons. Be sure to allow extra time for parking and shuttle transportation.

. Bring a boarding pass, ticket, or ticket confirmation, such as a printed itinerary and a government-issued photo ID. Children under the age of 18 do not require an ID.

. Double check your carry-on baggage to make sure you have removed prohibited items such as pocketknives, scissors, and tools.

. If you do not have checked baggage and you already have a boarding pass, ticket or ticket confirmation, you can proceed directly to your gate through the security checkpoint. Please note that certain airlines do not offer gate check-in.

AT the Airport:

. Do NOT bring drinks or other liquids to the security checkpoint unless they are in paper or polystyrene (e.g. Styrofoam?), sealed or seal-able/spill-proof containers.

. Do NOT bring food to the security checkpoint unless it is wrapped or in a container. Unpeeled natural foods like fruit are ok.

. Put metal IN your carry-on bag, this includes jewelry, loose change, keys, mobile phone, pagers, and personal data assistants (PDAs).

. Take OUT your laptop computer. Place it in a bin, separate from its carry case.

. Take OFF your outer coat. Place it in a bin. Suit jackets and blazers do not have to be removed, unless requested by the screener.

America's Top 5 Golf Communities

As the popularity of golf continues to grow, so has the popularity of golf communities. Golf communities are planned neighborhoods which are focused around golf courses but have many more amenities. The obvious advantage is the closeness and exclusiveness of living right next to a golf course. But many golf communities also offer perks such as chefs, nature trails, stables and in the most exclusive, access to private jets. Generally, these neighborhoods are also gated communities which adds an extra sense of security.

Topping out the list is Santa Lucia Preserve in Carmel, California. Santa Lucia Preserve is made up of over 20,000 acres, but 18,000 of that has been made into a wildlife conservatory. The remaining 2,000 acres is home to 300 families. There is a great golf course, as well as a excellent dining and a sports complex. One of its high points is its equestrian program.

A Nursing Breast Is A Healthier Breast

In recent years we've learned a lot about how breastfeeding improves the health of babies. Formula feeding increases the risk of many types of diseases. Short term, formula fed babies are more likely to become ill with ear and respiratory infections and other illnesses. When they do get sick they are more seriously ill and much more likely to be hospitalized. Long term, formula fed infants are more likely to suffer from diabetes, obesity, asthma, Crohn's disease, and other ailments.

Interestingly, a lot of research points to numerous ways that breastfeeding impacts Mom's health. Let's look at just one of these findings.

A Lactating Breast is a Healthier Breast

Numerous studies have shown that breastfeeding reduces the risk of breast cancer. This is due in part to hormonal factors: nursing moms go without ovulating for longer periods of time than women who don't breastfeed. There is a connection between the number of times a woman has an ovulatory cycle in her lifetime and the likelihood of her contracting breast cancer. Breastfeeding also completes the normal fertility cycle of conception, pregnancy and lactation.

Additionally, the act of suckling itself plays a role. One native culture that traditionally only nursed on one breast had fewer incidences of cancer in the lactating breast. This makes perfect sense when you think about it: a body organ that is used the way it's designed to be used is healthier than tissue that isn't used. If you decided to sit in a wheelchair instead of using your legs to walk, what do you suppose would happen to your legs? They would eventually atrophy and become diseased.

Additionally, the longer a woman breastfeeds, the greater the protection offered against cancer. Scientists find that the more months a woman has spent nursing, the lower her risk of contracting breast cancer... great incentive to listen to the World Health Organization's advice to nurse for two years or more!

Interestingly, breastfeeding lowers the *babies* rate of breast cancer! While science is still trying to figure out exactly why this is so, one theory is that exposure to Mom's estrogen via breastmilk immunizes baby to estrogen later in life. Also, the immune factors present in mom's milk likely play a role in strengthening resistance to disease, even to a disease like cancer.

Who knows what else the scientific community will discover about the magic of mom's milk?

Durham NC: A Center Of Learning

Durham offers a lot of activities for visitors and residents to do. There are about a quarter of a million people who currently reside in Durham with around 5 million people who visit annually. Currently Durham is considered one of the centers for learning in North Carolina.

Durham has very good colleges which take up residence there. Currently Duke University takes up residence in Durham. This college is known throughout the world and is considered a very good college. This helps attract a younger crowd to Durham and helps bring arts and culture to the community. It also brings about a good education and keeps a lot of the kids in town.

The other college in Durham is the North Carolina Central University. This isn?t as world renowned as Duke but it does provide a good education and helps bring more jobs and culture to the community.

Both colleges have their own art museums. They both have reasonable admissions fees and can help you experience some of the culture that is located inside Durham.

There is an abundant supply of sports to choose from in Durham. You can go watch a local football, baseball, or basketball game at one of the colleges when they are playing or visit some of the local golf courses for some fun on the green.

Parks can be found where you can go to throw a frisbee or just let the kids play. This allows you to have a nice relaxing evening and get out of the house. There are also trails and nature walks in and around Durham for people who wish to explore nature.

How Affordable Is Really Affordable?

You?ve found your dream home and can?t believe the price! You?ve never been so lucky. So, how can you make sure your affordable dream home truly is affordable? First, make certain you?ve viewed several properties in the area and compare the pricing. It?s hard to know if you have selected an affordable home if you?ve only viewed one property in that area. After you?ve viewed several properties, then you can assess whether or not the home you?ve selected is in a comparable market price range.

Also, consider checking with your local property assessor?s office or tax assessor in order to compare market values of these homes. Secondly, make sure you?re not paying for decoration. Imagine the home or property completely bare. Would it still be worth the price you?re paying if all of the fancy decorations were taken down? You Must Stick to Your Rules to Succeed

Some times you think you know it all!

Over the last seven weeks I have been keeping an eye on a property for sale in a town next to me. I wrote an article about it as being for private sale by owner. I did contact the owner enquiring about the property and the purchase price. At the time I thought the price was too high for the current market. So I let it go.

About one week ago I was doing a delivery for my company past this property and I noticed two agent?s signs in the front yard. There was a lady in the front yard doing some tidying up, so I decided to stop and quiz her about the property. I had only talked to her on the phone previously regarding the price.

I went through the property and thought it had potential for a vendor?s terms deal. While I was going through the property I was mentally structuring a suitable deal that would suit the both of us. All through that I had misgivings about ripping the old lady off. She seemed to be a sweet old dear. She said that she had to sell so she could buy a new unit that was being built now. It was due for completion in six weeks.

I knew then and there, there was no way she was going to sell her property in time to be able to pay for her new unit. It was obvious she had not allowed enough time to sell her house. What was going to happen was, the unit would be ready and she would not be able to pay for it as she would not have sold her home.

As I was going through the home I was putting together a vendor finance deal in my head for this ladies property. I asked the lady if she would consider taking the property off the market and dealing directly with me. I wanted her to be able to get out of her home and be able to buy into the unit. That way we would have a win/win situation. What I wanted was to buy this property with none of my own money. But unfortunately for me the deal did not stack up. The figures were not right for me to proceed with the deal. So I had to walk away from it.

Ten days later I was talking to a local agent and he said he had the property sold for five thousand under her asking price five weeks prior, but the lady rejected the offer. No longer did I feel for her, she had her chance. This brings back one of my golden rules, Fall in love with the deal, not the property?

Also while I was talking to the local agent we were talking about some local developments. He mentioned about some units being built in another part of town. As it turns out there is a house for sale right along side this block of units. It is suitable for four units on the block. The house needs major work, so it will need to be removed to make way for a unit development.

Another thing I started to see was I tried to cut the agent out of the original deal. This goes against all I believe in. They are part of your team. The agent is on the spot with all the latest developments, this one proved that to me with the unit development site. I think that you must stick to your rules at all times. That way you can always go back and do another deal with them at a later stage. This can be a hard lesson to learn. But it is worth it. As you can see I have found this out.

Backpacks And Rucksacks: Some Points You Should Know Before Buying

Backpacks - known in Europe more commonly as rucksacks - are a key piece of walking equipment - but with so many on the market, which do you go for? This article aims to give some helpful hints on choosing the right one for you.

Backpacks (I'll call them this for the sake of convenience) come in many different sizes, materials, weights and colours. You are simply spoilt for choice. The right backpack for you will largely be determined by what kind of outdoor activity you undertake and, like most pieces of personal equipment, getting it right can make a lot of difference to the fun you get out of your day. Let's look at some different types.

Small backpacks - sometimes known as daysacks - are typically made of lightweight nylon and have a capacity of 20-35 litres. They are usually fitted with a pair of padded shoulderstraps and may have a couple of outside pockets fitted with zip closures. The main bag should have a drawstring with a stay-tight sliding toggle fitted and a top flap fastened by a couple of click-buckles. This type of backpack isn't normally reinforced in any way.

These are fine for taking a day's walk in fine weather in gentle countryside. The nylon is usually showerproofed but won't keep out a real downpour - it's not intended to. This size backpack will hold a packed lunch, a bottle of water and your jacket, with the side pockets handy for gloves, keys and the like. It will be very light and should be easy to carry - look for well-padded shoulder straps!

Medium backpacks normally have a capacity of between about 45 to 90 litres. The material is usually again nylon, although of a heavier grade than the daysack. They will again have the main bag, two or more exterior pockets that should have storm flaps in addition to the zip fasteners, and are far more weatherproof than the daysack. The main bag will again be closed by the drawstring and stay-tight toggle but the top flap will be thicker and far more water resistant. It may also include a pocket as well and there's usually ice-axe straps fitted to the outside back of the backpack, together with various 'd-loops' for attaching a tent or sleeping bag. This size of backpack is suited to more serious trekking with maybe a night or two out.

Large backpacks are generally in the range of 100 - 150 litres (and that's big!) but in construction are similar to medium backpacks, though they obviously have more room and more pockets. This size of backpack is normally only used on serious hikes that may last many days and will hold just about everything you will need for this kind of extended expedition.

Medium and large backpacks can be had in a variety of material weights, from fairly light nylon up to really thick cordura-type material that is very tough indeed. They can also be fitted with waterproof liners though many now come with 'Gore-Tex' type lining as standard. The weight and durability of material is determined by conditions you think you might experience - there's no point getting a backpack that will stand an Arctic winter if you normally go hiking in Nevada in the summer!

The other thing that is normally fitted to larger backpacks is a waistbelt and, on some, a chest stabiliser strap. These are not for show - they make a huge difference to your comfort and stamina when walking. In older-type backpacks the belt was an added-on item - in modern backpacks it's built-in. Wear it as tight as is comfortable. It should sit on the hips and these will then take a lot of the weight from your shoulders - the shoulder straps become more like stabilisers, aided by the cheststrap, and keep the backpack in place. Large backpacks often have a rigid internal frame to stop sagging - this is also a real boon on a long hike.

Another feature to look for, especially if you're planning to walk in summer or hotter areas, is an 'aeroback' design. This is a rigid plate that forms the part of the backpack nearest your back. It's curved slightly away from your back and holds the backpack in such a position that air can circulate, helping to avoid the 'soaked shirt syndrome'. I have one myself. They're great.

One other thing to remember. When you go to buy your backpack, take all the clothing and equipment you think you will need for your kind of hiking. If it doesn't fit the backpack you first look at, try a bigger one! Nothing is more frustrating than trying to cram everything into a too-small sack. Things break, bottles burst - you get the picture.

In summary, always get the best backpack you can afford and perhaps one size bigger than you think you might ever need. It's surprising how things mount up! Visit a reputable outdoors retailer and don't be shy about trying several out until you find one that really feels 'right' for you. You're going to be together for a while - take your time and you'll find your backpack really is the best friend you can have on a hike.

This is unfortunate although it also shows a sense of irresponsibility on the part of those people who dug their own grave of debt. Nevertheless in the blame game world of human civilizations and societies people who have hardships of life usually try to blame someone else for them.

So what started out to be a great advancement in the concept an ownership society in the United States of America looks like it is slowly losing some of its steam and actually might end up causing a little bit of a problem in the future. The Federal Reserve says that the housing market collapse is not as bad as people portray it and this is relatively true however, it is something we need to watch in the future.

If people walk away from their loans this can cause a problem in the banking system and American citizens are already in too much debt with short-term loans and credit cards. An ownership society is a great idea and we should commend our leadership for working towards that noble goal, but at the same time we must be very careful that we talk about ownership we are not just talking about debt; rather actual ownership.

Owning a piece of America should not be owning an overwhelming responsibility of stress to make payments on something that is not his worth as much as the loan value. Please consider this in 2006.

Sarasota Real Estate Housing Market

Compared to the same 3 month period (March to May) from last year, Sarsota real estate sales are down. For this period, Sarasota real estate area had 1,393 sold properties last year compared to only 865 this year. Last year, the same period had an average of only 2 months. However, for May 2006 the inventory skyrocketed to an average of 13.8 months. This is definitely indicative of Sarasota real estate becoming a buyer?s market. On the other hand, Sarasota real estate prices increased, up from an average of $240 per square foot to an average of $295 per square foot in May of 2006. Today in Sarasota the average price of houses for sale in May 2006 was $762,000 while average price sold was only $562,000. The market has indeed decelerated from last year, albeit this is the nature of equilibration towards a normal and stable market. With lots of properties for sale on the market, sellers really do need to price their property right in order to sell it. The rates are still fine, rising up slightly to 6.75% for 30 years fixed, and Sarasota has much to offer in order to attract buyers. Properties for sale will tend to float on the market longer than it would have for the last couple of years since buyers know that they have a large pool of selection to choose from. The number of buyers will also continue to gradually drop this summer as the market begins to take the command again. This point in time is certainly the time to buy. Prospective clients who take the time to fly down to Florida in the summer are more serious buyers since they have done the research and know what they are looking for.

In my opinion what the data is showing us is the reality that last year's price increase was strictly due to a lack of inventory. This is the law of supply and demand at work. With overflowing supply of resale and new construction homes, one can expect that the price of homes will continue spiral down. Sarasota real estate area is very conducive to live in and there are several more years in the prediction of experts regarding the influx of baby boomers towards this area. Furthermore, many new jobs have been opening, which presents an excellent opportunity for professionals and entrepreneurs alike who are contemplating on moving and buying a home in Florida.

Overall, Sarasota real estate property values are stabilizing. In the heat of the summer, this is going to be a more normal market. Now is an opportune time to buy your dream house in paradise. Prime time season is around the corner and properties that have not gone under contract by now have adjusted their prices. Sellers are getting motivated and are still moving on. There are some great deals out there especially on condos under $300,000 that prospective buyers can purchase in a golfing community or close to the coast.

Too Broke to Budget Family Fun

Break the Blah's with These No Cost or Low Cost Ideas

Man oh man, it sure is easy to wish and hope and then be upset with what you do have. Even if you feel the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, as soon as you climb that fence... there's another fence that you just KNOW is hiding the most emerald-like grass you could find. Point made, we are very difficult to satisfy.

However, it doesn't have to be that way for us hard working, unrewarded families! We can live the 'high life' without spending any money... or at the most pocket change!

This is how a normal day would go in an unhappy family. The parents come home from work, eat dinner, watch tv, and go to bed. The children's day is fairly similar, chores after homework... tv... bla bla bla. It's usually 'All we can do... we can't afford to go out...'

Why don't you try some of these ideas, and see if everyone's moods don't lift?!

1.) It's ok to have a 'Pizza Friday'. A better idea is 'Foreign Food Wednseday' . Wednseday is usually right in the middle of the week. (It may change sometimes...) Being it is the longest day to get through because it the week is either 'almost over' or 'you still have half to go...' Throwing in a change can give Wednseday Dinner a Friday Feeling. Don't stick with the same food, or even the same culture. Try new foods you've never had before. Look up a few trivia facts about the culture you are tasting, and share your lessons. Maybe decorate with a theme. Make it creative, get everyone involved, and make it fun!

2.)It's okay to curl up and watch The Simpsons together. It's not okay to watch tv from the time dinner is done until you go to bed. Not everyday. After dinner, or even after a tv show... go for a walk! The season is finally changing, and you don't have to wait for the snow to melt completely before going outside! There are endless ways to make walks fun with children, but the best thing is that a walk is fun enough as it is.
(Walking also helps depression go away, because it is exercise that boosts serotonine.)

3.)If you are all in a 'movie mood', you don't have to go pay $20/person to watch they newest movie. You don't even have to drive to the rental store and pay $5 to borrow a new release on DVD. You probably own a large amount of DVD's you bought because you like and haven't watched in a while. Watch one of those together... Cut up some cheese and crackers w/ pepperoni, make bagel bites or popcorn or cake or cut up fruit... make sure everyone is equipped with snack options and beverage. Make a big deal out of watching the movie.

4.)Play games with your family! Every night doesn't have to be 'Family Fun Night', and every game doesn't have to take place on 'Family Fun Night'. Play a card game, a boardgame, or a 'home made game' (Tossing pennies into different sized objects- coffe can, soda bottle, mayo jar, etc.- at different point values for high score) I would recommend to any family to spend $40 on Cranium's Family Fun game! It may be something you have to save for, because honestly $40 can be a luxury at times. I promise it is worth the expense, because the entire family will have lots of fun playing this game... that includes that parents! This is not a game that is more fun for kids. But you don't need to spend money to play a game before bedtime!

5.) Aw yes, family fun night. That is a wonderful thing that varies in different families. If you don't already have it in your family, you need to. It can be weekly, or monthly, or whenever one is called. Regardless of how often it occurs, or wether it is planned or not... it is a luxury that is free and brings happiness to all. Why can't every night be treated mildly like 'family night' without calling it such? Instead of one person on the computer, one person in their room playing, one person lounging in front of Sportscenter all night... bring the family together more often!

6.) Outings! Take a drive together to visit family or to view scenery. Go to the closest hiking trail you know of and take the family for a walk in the woods. Pack a picnic! Even if you can't afford to go out to the zoo and eat at McDonald's for lunch, it can often be totally free to walk through the woods and point out chipmunks, birds, and other random animals you may see. You can also comment on the flowers and plants growing around you. It can be totally free to pack up some fruit and sandwiches into a backpack (Never throw your trash on the ground!). IF you do have a little money to spend on a disposable, or you already own a digital... take pictures! It is always important to take lots of pictures of your family having fun together. Those memories are the most important things we have. Without physically preserving those outings... going for a walk with a picnic packed in comfortable bag is absolutely free!

7.) Always get the whole family involved with ideas of fun things you can do together. Keep a coffee can or jar somewhere accessible at all times for a note to be dropped in. The 'comment box' sounds corny and cliche, but that doesn't affect it's effectiveness.

When you look at your life to see what you have, look only at your life. So what if your neighbors can take vacations to Europe with their family and you can't. So what if you can't afford a fourwheeler for everyone to ride and your coworker owns 4. The less you have, the more you appreciate the things you have. They mean more. Your family will be the most important thing you will ever have.

Tourist Guide To Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is one of the Canary Islands and a popular holiday destination. The Canaries are a small group of Spanish Islands located in the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 200km off the Northwest coast of Africa. Gran Canaria is a volcanic island with very dramatic and unique scenery. The Canaries are a popular winter holiday choice for Europeans due to the year round warm temperatures and frequent sunny days.

A Short History of Gran Canaria

After many conflicting battles between European companies on who owns the Canary Islands, the Spanish finally won and made claim to them. Apart from being a travelling stopover for famous adventurers such as Christopher Columbus, the Canaries were not really used for much. However, in the fifties people began to discover the physical and mental benefits of the sun and from this point, tourism in the Canaries took off.

Getting there

There really aren?t any other option of getting to the Canaries by any way other than air. Gran Canarias airport (Aeropuerto de Gando) is located in the southwest of the island. Taxis and bus transfers then transport tourists to their resort locations. It is also possible to travel to and from the other islands in the Canaries by ferry.

Accommodation and Where to Stay

The main accommodation on offer is self-catering apartments, hotels and villas. There are a number of popular resorts on the island that cater for very different needs. For nightlife lovers stay at Playa Del Ingles and for a peaceful holiday stay at Puerto de M?gan.

Sights and Attractions

Take a stroll through Las Palmas as there are many historic buildings and streets as well as a Cathedral. The main sightseeing features on the island is natural beauty of the area. There are magnificent sand dunes, volcanic mountains and stunning beaches.

Shopping on the Island

Gran Canaria is not really a shopping haven as it is mainly a relaxation holiday choice. Therefore, shops on the island usually sell souvenirs, beach games and general travel necessities.

Wine and Dine

Every resort is plastered with bars and restaurants as well as English pubs. Many of the restaurants are open planned and located on the seafront for extra appeal. All kinds of international cuisine is offered so choosing should not be hard.

Losing Pregnancy Weight


Losing weight after pregnancy presents a special type of problem. At no other time in a woman's life is she likely to gain as much weight in as short a period. And after having a baby, especially your first baby, life changes drastically. You might find it hard to make time to exercise. If you're nursing, you can't restrict calories. It seems as though many of the usual avenues to losing weight have been cut off.


Though experts recommend that a woman gain no more than about 27 pounds during pregnancy, for some of us, that's easier said than done. Some women report that they gained weight during pregnancy regardless of how carefully they controlled their eating, even if they made a point of exercising. Some pregnancies just seem to demand weight gain - interestingly, this seems to be particularly true of women who are naturally thinner than average to begin with. For a naturally 'skinny' woman to gain what might seem to be a huge amount of weight - sometimes up to sixty or even seventy pounds - during pregnancy seems to be a rather common phenomenon. Pregnancy seems to change the way that food is metabolized and fat is stored. The amount of weight you gain during pregnancy may even be genetic.


Of course, pregnancy food cravings also have something to do with it! We've all heard of some of the bizarre cravings that pregnant women can get, but in fact, most crave the nutrients they need the most. It's not uncommon for a woman who is normally a vegetarian to have strong cravings for meat while she is pregnant, for instance. These are cravings you can and should give in to, because your body is telling you what it needs.


Some women also find that they need to eat during the first trimester, because it keeps morning sickness at bay. 'Morning sickness' is actually a bit of a misnomer, as it can happen at any time of day or night. It tends to happen the most when your stomach is empty and your blood sugar is low. Some women pack on the pounds during these first few months of pregnancy just to keep from feeling sick all the time.


So, for one reason or another, many women find that it's very difficult or impossible to control their weight gain during pregnancy. That's not to say that you shouldn't try, of course, but if you know that you're eating healthy foods and the weight is coming on regardless, let it. You'll do more harm than good by trying to diet during pregnancy. As long as you aren't binging or eating unhealthy foods, rest assured that your body has its own wisdom and you are gaining weight because you need to.


Though only about ten or fifteen pounds are lost during delivery, there are plenty of opportunities to lose weight after the baby is born. For one thing, if you give it a month or so, you might find that most of the weight disappears on its own during nursing. In fact, that's one of the reasons why women are programmed to gain weight during pregnancy - after the baby's born, you need that extra weight. It all gets converted to milk to feed your baby. In fact, nursing full time burns about 500 calories a day - the same as a good workout. At that rate, you could lose a pound a week without even trying.


That having been said, there may come a time when you do have to put some effort into losing those last few pounds. After your baby is weaned, that natural means of weight loss isn't there anymore. It's time to start adding some workouts to your daily schedule. If you don't have the opportunity to exercise without the baby, take him along - that's why jogging strollers were invented. Or boost your calorie burning by carrying your baby in a front or back carrier while you go for a walk or hike. The babies love it, and for you, it's like carrying a constantly increasing weight around with your for hours at a time - great for burning fat.


After you have a baby, you may feel as though the baby has taken over your entire existence. It doesn't have to be that way. Take the time to reclaim your body and your time, and you'll have more energy to take on the hectic schedule of a new mother.

Breast Cancer: Battleground Stories


A slip of paper with the information below was handed to me by one of the brave women I had the pleasure of knowing during the meeting of a local support group. She said, Whatever you do, make sure at least one person reads it.



Of all the cancer related deaths, breast cancer is the second cause of death after lung cancer among women. This disease strikes the male population as well. An estimated 40,200 women will die of breast cancer this year, but many may be spared by early detection. Some medical providers may be offering low or no cost mammograms.

I had asked a friend to ask the group to let me sit in on one of the survivor meetings. When the group accepted my presence, we met in a comfortable lounge with five wonderfully vibrant women and two robust men, all ranging in ages from twenty-eight to sixty-four who had come together to talk about their battles of survival and their innermost feelings. They told me that they were twenty-two people but a few couldn't make it to this session. Having two men in a group like this was unusual because men refuse to tell their problems in a group setting, especially about a disease like breast cancer that is known to be a women's malady.


Celia, the first one who spoke, was twenty-four when her cancer was detected. Now, she is forty. She said, her cancer comes back uninvited every few years. She is currently under treatment again. There were times when she wanted to do away with herself to save her parents the heartache and trouble. She still has awful nightmares. The night before she had a hippopotamus chasing her into a lake filled with milk. Celia is a very bright woman. She doesn't easily give in to depression and has an indomitable spirit. She said what she tells here to the group, she'd never tell to her family or to her doctors. The group has always understood and respected each other's confidence.

During her first round of treatments, Celia got to know one of the male social workers. It was the best time in her life, although she looked awful with no hair and an uncontrollable nausea. He became her lover while she was in treatment. She said, he held her while she vomited, took off from his work to be with her on her bad days, and waited for her at the door while she was going through chemotherapy. As soon as she was given a clean bill of health, he left her; she was devastated.


Why is it, she asked the group, Some men love women only when they are in despair? Then she answered her own question, Saving the damsel in distress syndrome! It inflates the male ego.


I couldn't help but reflect that this affair had hurt Celia more than the illness. Still, she tried to have a positive attitude and considered herself a survivor, even though her cancer had returned again.


Eileen, the bubbliest in the group, was forty-one when the cancer was discovered. There was no breast cancer in her family. She was an athlete who ran every day and played singles tennis twice a week. She ate a low-fat diet with practically no red meat. Moreover she had a mammogram done when she was thirty-five and then another one when she turned forty. Both those mammograms' reports were clean. Fortunately she examined herself frequently. Several months after her last mammogram she discovered a lump in her right breast. Three months later she went in for a follow up and had a biopsy. The diagnosis was benign but the doctor called her back in three months.


When she went back, the same spot showed some scar tissue. She wasn't afraid because she trusted in her first biopsy. She said, at the time, she had a 'this can't happen to me' attitude.


This time, however, things were very different. The breast cancer was in her body, but Eileen wasn't going to give up. She obtained all the information she could get her hands on.

She says she went through a wide range of feelings. The strongest emotion she felt was anger. She went around the house kicking in the doors.


Eileen is one of the lucky ones. She is healthy at the moment and has finished her last reconstructive surgery. Thanks to advances in medicine, my figure looks better than ever, she said jokingly.


Martha has raised two children to adulthood after her cancer was discovered fourteen years ago. She has a wonderful, supportive, sunshiny attitude and she is a joy to be with. She has just retired from a twenty-five year teaching career.


Martha says she wasn't always like this. She went through all the emotions and then some. Now, she is learning to play the guitar, something she yearned for all her life. She is also very active in the affairs of her church. She prefers to believe that she is living with the cancer with gusto and in spite of it. She has done a lot to bring about cancer awareness nationwide. She has even attended fancy parties without a wig. I try to make at least one person aware per day, she said.


The oldest one in the group that day was Paul. Paul was already suffering from skin cancer when the breast cancer was discovered four years ago. He went to see a surgeon in another state because this surgeon was one of the few doctors around who specialized in male breast cancer. Paul has a wry sense of humor. He described with motions the funny incidents of himself getting a mammogram and of being pulled like taffy when almost nothing was there to pull. He said all the bad feelings he had experienced were already finished with he other C, referring to his skin cancer. So there was nothing left for this one. As he put it, he has been through the four horsemen: Mastectomy, Chemotherapy, Radiation, Tamoxifen. He felt bad only when he discovered his wife weeping secretly before the mastectomy. He didn't let her know he saw her. One person in the group suggested that maybe he should. He said he can't handle that.
Paul still cuts his own lawn and fixes things around the house but talking to the family about fears--his or theirs--is not his thing.


Sheila now believes that breast cancer is not a death sentence, even though her cousin, who was also her best friend, was diagnosed with this terrible disease around the same time as Sheila was diagnosed. Her cousin is no longer alive. She always wondered what we did wrong, she remembered. She felt, when her cousin died in a year and a half, her life had to come to a stop also. She went under extensive counseling because of it, and she discovered that her family, her children, and her life were the most important things.


Nowadays, Sheila sees her battle as a blessing. She believes her cousin would be living now if her cancer had been caught ahead of time. She volunteers at the clinic in her free time, especially counseling the newcomers.


When he too was diagnosed, Jonathan, the other man in the group, had already lost a sister and a cousin to this woman's disease. He was furious. He blamed the medical profession, God, his mother, his wife, his co-workers, the government, and everybody in existence. After the surgery, he picked a fight with the doctors accusing them of not paying enough attention to him.
Jonathan still felt that people were more compassionate to women with breast cancer. He said he didn't blame them because of the losses in his family but nobody knew how to give support to frightened men. I am not afraid of showing my feelings on the subject but the medical profession is not ready for men with emotions, he said.

According to him the best way is what they have now, the support group of survivors receiving encouragement from each other. He said, There would be more men here if we could only get them to agree to talk about it.


The last one of the group and the youngest, Karen, found a lump while she was in the shower. She immediately went to her doctor and asked for a mammogram and an ultrasound. The results were normal. They showed nothing nasty. Both the doctor and the radiologist thought that the lump was fibrocystic.


After a few months, Karen still had the lump. So Karen went to see a surgeon on her own. The surgeon also thought that the lump was fibrocystic. After two more months when she found few more lumps near the original lump, she forced the surgeon to remove them. On the surgeon's recommendation, she went to have a needle biopsy one early morning. Later that day the pathologist called to inform her that she had breast cancer.


At first Karen cried. She cried until she had no more will or strength to even stand up. Then she called her mother. Not wanting to face reality, her mother said, At your age? What are you trying to pull? Karen banged the phone down. That is when her anger surfaced and she promised herself that she would fight this tooth and nail. She told us that she owed her life to her mother for making her angry enough.


Later, it was found out that Karen's cancer was the aggressive kind. She had to go through mastectomy plus chemotherapy.


Karen's doctors are very cautious now. She is scheduled for a bone scan in a few days.
Karen has read practically all the literature on the disease. She believes in her chances of survival greatly because of the recent advances in medicine. At the end, Karen recited a quote from her notebook, The journey back is no longer or farther than the forward run. She didn't know who said it, but they all agreed it could have been any one of them.


I can't help but admire the bravery of these men and women, and not only of these seven but of those everywhere, fighting with this dreadful disease. The ones I met were radiant, hopeful, and with spirit. Their courage will always be an inspiration.
